The day before we went to the Observatory, Savannah's soccer team played in the championship game

AND WON!!!

The Griffith Observatory opened in the thirties and reopened in November after 4 years of renovations. Here is Charlotte on the front lawn in the late afternoon sunshine...

Here is a shot of the Observatory's most famous neighbor - taken thru the lens of my binoculars.

We were there on an extraordinarily clear, dry day. Here are Lesli and the dome of the planetarium in the waning sunlight.
Its a great place for stargazing, and also a terrific place to observe the downtown Los Angeles skyline - here it is before sunset...
and after the sun has gone down .
Here is Charlotte on the roof with a full moon rising behind her
A new addition to the interior of the building is a gigantic, extremely high-resolution photograph of the night sky. The photo is about 30' high and 60' wide. It represents a small fraction of the night sky. Here is a small fraction of the photograph. The big dots are galaxies...
Also indoors are models of the planets. Here Lesli orbits Jupiter and Saturn. On the left you can see Mars - a tennis ball compared to the two giants.
The setting sun splashing sepia tones on the dome
The sun setting in the Pacific Ocean as seen from the roof. The Capital Records building is barely visible in the lower left. It is famous for it's shape - a stack of phonograph records.
As we were leaving, the city began to light up beneath us...
Here are some recent snaps unrelated to our trip to the observatory. Below, Savannah's 4th grade class is about to sing in the Christmas concert.
